Stainless & Steel Systems LTD was formed in 2011 and has recently been upgraded to an official business from a family self-employed ran profession. We specialize in the design, supply and assembly of a range of stainless steel architectural fabrications, including glass, balustrades, staircases, railings, fences, seating and much more all to relevant specification grades. Workshop facilities are directly under our management to ensure specifications and delivery are fulfilled. We provide exceptional delivery times and installation services up to 200 miles from Lymington. 

 

We offer a valuable free quotation service within a 50 mile radius too. Our products can also be ordered and delivered nationally for installation by others. Our customers include architectural specifiers, contractors, developers and private individuals. We provide exceptional service and prompt delivery no matter the project.

  • Rod Railing Balustrades - Vastly adaptable, this product is both ideal for commercial and domestic applications. Connected by hollow stainless steel tubes, rod railings are positively represented across the nation as a safe and aesthetic choice to line your property. 

  • Rope Wire Balustrades - Completely customizable to your liking, amount of ropes and post height tailored to your liking. The filler free wire offers an open area effect which is ideal for transitioning from interior to exterior settings.

  • Glass and Steel - Rounded or Square Edge Poles - The best of both worlds! Providing the lucrative brushed texture of metal coupled with pristine glass panels offers a fantastic mix for ensuring security whilst maintaining panoramic views from your property.

  • Frameless Glass - For those with a need to maintain a panoramic view. This option utilizes the full potential of toughened glass and provides a slick modern look with transparent material outlining your property. Ideal for balconies and patios. 

  • Bolted stand off glass - Bolts driven directly into the upholding level material, this balustrade offers a seamless transition from standing surface to glass by using the outer body to attach the glass. Similar to frameless glass without the use of stainless steel poles to obstruct your view. 

  • Opaque and coloured variants - All of our glass products are opaque and colour customizable both within interior and exterior settings as long as they follow building regulations.

Balustrade systems - FAQs

What finishes are available? 

Our stainless steel products come with a brushed finish straight from the manufacturer. All of our products are galvanized and powder coated for additional production and smooth finish.

Will measurements be performed within my property?

As design, manufacturing and fitting service company, we are adamant on ensuring all measurements are correctly undertaken. We offer free on-site measurements up to 50 miles from our offices in Lymington.

What spacing should you work with for balustrades?

The required spacing between balustrade posts differs from materials used and the thickness of materials used. Stainless steel offers a range of section widths, ranging from 800mm to 2400mm each at 1050mm in height.

 

What grade of stainless steel do we provide?

There are different grades that a steel can be composited from. As this is a material that corrodes naturally, the industry standard grade that is used by us is 304 for interior and 316 which is more resistant to corrosion and more recommended for outside use. 

What height should my balustrade be?

The height of your balustrade is calculated from the finished floor level. For internal placement such as stars, floors and ramps the limit is 900mm whilst exterior placement goes up to 1100mm for balconies and roofs. 

Which glass thickness do you recommend?

The thickness of glass required is subject to everyday use and occupancy of the property. Once secured, glass panels should not move over 25mm once a level of force is applied to it both within interior settings. Exterior products such as balconies and juliet balconies are allowed additional space over 25mm. Although we recommend contact our support team, the general advice is as follows:

  • ​Internal/external stainless steel posts - 10mm toughened glass

  • Frameless glass for internal use - 12mm toughened glass

  • Frameless glass for external use - 12mm toughened glass with drop less than 500mm

  • Frameless glass for external use - 15mm toughened glass with drop more than 500mm.

  • Frameless glass for external use - 15mm toughened glass with drop less than 500mm with handrail.

  • Frameless glass for external use - 17.5mm toughened laminate glass with drop more than 500mm without handrail.

Are your balustrades cut to size?

Yes, all of our products have to option to be customized in length. 

All stainless steel balustrade systems are subject to building regulations. All of our balustrades are galvanized and powder coated for additional production and smooth finish.

Guide to choosing the right staircase

Stairs are often only seen as functional, so few people understand the amount of choice you have until those choices are upon you and you have to make decisions fast. This is why our company not only specializes in the design and manufacturing of bespoken stairs, but also provides excellent installers to fit them accordingly within your property. Each house is different and that renders every project a new challenge to overcome. There are many things that you must consider when it comes to deciding on what is both functional and practical:

  • Space for stairs - Be aware of the amount of space allowed for a properly functioning staircase. This is an important limiting factor as it must follow strict building regulations.

  • Stair Regulations - Flights should not exceed 37 stairs without containing a bend or landing. Spindles must be 100mm apart. At least one handrail on either side if the stairs are over one meter wide.

  • Dust and disruption - Renovating or changing stairs is a big deal. As they see constant use, they require a timeless design to uphold the never ending use. During the change over process expect a numerous amount of particle dust and inconvenience.

  • Materials - Depending on your aesthetic and intended functionality, wood is a fantastic traditional material intended for an "old school" appearance. On the other end, metal materials provide a contemporary piece which are growing in popularity due to recent incorporations with glass.

  • Practicalities - Who is using the stairs? The need to be safe and easy to maneuverer is vital when it comes to the elderly and children.

  •  Budget - Your budget will determine what you may and may not do. Bespoken staircases can set you back by £20,000 whilst made to measure range roughly around £3,000. We constantly maintain a delicate balance between price friendly and high quality products for our customers.

Many limiting factors play a role in deciding the ideal product for you, these include space, budget, materials, purpose, functionality, location and many more. Stairs are a subtle compliment to any size property that, unless flashy, goes unnoticed. However, many do not realize the true scale of how a well adjusted and made set of stairs can drastically change your environment. Please note that each staircase is subject to various limiting factors that may limit our operating area. We will only accept projects that we know can be safely and effectively completed. In order to explore your options with us, here is a list of products we excel at below, all of which can be assembled interior and exterior settings. 

  • Straight stairs - Wood and stainless steel options available. The most common set found across commercial and domestic settings. Fast production and design process. Vastly adaptable to many interior and exterior settings.

  • U + L Shaped Stairs - Wood, fabric and stainless steel options available. Adaptable to interiors with subsequent space and various exterior setting. 

  • Y shaped (Bifurcated) - Grand scale staircase usually implemented in interior's open space, usually found near the entrance at mansions, offices, airports and train stations. Large open area required for installation and assembly. 

  • Cantilever - One of our most popular and exquisite products! Cantilever, well known by their "hovering" design produce a captivating and seamless effect. The stud is installed into a concrete or steel beam with the brackets protruding outward. A wall is then built around the brackets. Then the finished treads are bolted in place. Ideal for wooden stairs. 

  • Winder - This staircase is usually mistook for the more common "L" or "U" designs due to the common shape it takes within properties. Although similar in appearance, the winder offers additional stair room as the stairs spiral in a hard edge fashion, this ultimately produces mini levels across a series of several steps that fill in the hard corners of a property. Fabric and wood options are popular for this option.

  • Ladder - If space is an issue, we offer specialized bespoken ladder staircases that have a steep vertical gradient. These are ideal for sudden drops or multi level properties such as outside offices or game rooms that have limited open areas. 

  • Fire Escape - Last but not least, our company has been vastly involved in the design, manufacturing, delivery and assembly of fire escape stairs for businesses and apartments alike. We construct our stairs of material that is fire resistant for at least 30 minutes and are wider than 800mm as per fire safety regulations. 

Our exterior products are galvanized and powder coated for maximum material security.

  • What wood slabs do you use?

Our solid wood slabs are bespoken to the specifications to each project. Oak, Cherry, and Maple are the most popular types of hardwoods. When stairs are made out of these materials, they are considered “finish grade”. Alternatives can be used and powder coated to desired colour for an appealing appearance. These are finished with a 360 grit sandpaper for maximum smoothness.

  • Will measurements be performed within my property?

We are adamant on ensuring all measurements are correctly undertaken and installed properly. We offer free on-site measurements up to 50 miles from our offices in Lymington.

 

  • Do you offer fitting services?

Yes, as design, manufacturing and fitting service company, our team includes qualified carpenters and joiners required to correctly construct your stairs. 

  • Do you supply without installation too?

Installation is not mandatory with our orders. As with all of our products we offer fully fabrication and delivery upon request. This is ideal for passing on our product onwards to third party contractors.

  • Why should we consider staircase specialists?

Which juliet balcony is right for you

Of course, due to the nature of modern architecture and properties, it is almost impossible to indefinitely pin point the correct choice as each project is different in terms of specifications, functionality and purpose. For clean and slick display, we use 21.5MM laminate toughened for our frameless and glass bottom frames provide both stern safety and a feeling of "openness" that is ideal for properties with a view. Otherwise, we suggest implementing our 10MM-12MM toughened glass - steel and circular balustrades for standard apartments and flats.

Juliet balcony systems we offer

In nature, Juliet balconies are ideal for element of repetitive design seen within large constructions such as apartments and offices. Each house is different and that renders every project a new challenge to overcome. This is why our company has specifically adapted and perfected the craft of production and installation of these popular glass products. Below is a primary list of standard Juliet balconies that we have to offer, however we are more than happy to produce bespoke products upon further consultation. 

  • Glass Bottom - Gorgeous alternative to traditional balconies, French balconies are fitted to first floor windows, outside a set of doors with an inward-opening to improve safety. We use 21.5MM toughened laminate glass for this product.

  • Frameless - Supported by slim yet strong side profiles, frameless balustrades offer a simple yet effective design that utilizes a single glass pane to provide an aesthetic, safe and clear aspect to any building; domestic or commercial. This balcony is able to go up to 3.0M with when accompanied with French doors. We use 21.5MM toughened laminate glass for this product.

  • Circular Handrail Juliet Balcony - The orbit Juliet uses top and bottom round stainless steel balustrades to hold up the glass panel, ultimately not taking away from the view. We use finished brushed stainless steel for our balustrades with 10-12MM toughened glass.

  • Steel Juliet Balcony - The best of both worlds, adding a luxurious and modern twist to regular Juliet balconies, steel or glass railings outline the panels on windows and doors. We use finished brushed stainless steel for our balustrades with 10-12MM toughened glass. 

 

Our exterior products are galvanized and powder coated for maximum material security. For household maintenance, we recommend white vinegar and water solution for thorough wipe down twice a year. Opaque, frosted and coloured glass options available.

  • What are my size options with each balcony?

The maximum width for steel balconies is exactly 7 meters. The maximum width of individual glass panes go up to 2.7 meters. As to avoid attaching additional poles on wider balconies, we allow small air gaps between each glass pane.  

  • Will measurements be performed within my property?

We are adamant on ensuring all measurements are correctly undertaken and installed properly. We offer free on-site measurements up to 50 miles from our offices in Lymington.

 

  • What measurements should I send over?

Rule of thumb is to add 300mm width in window or door openings to get the correct measurement for your Juliet balcony measurement. 

  • Is your glass durable?

Yes, no matter the specification our glass is at the very least 10mm toughened with high temperature resistance. In case of sharp impacts, the glass breaks into square fragments. Additionally, as we hot dip galvanize our glass, you can expect us to either powder coat or top up paint your glass to desired colour of black, white, graphite and silver.
